The 2016 Olympic Games opened in Rio de Janeiro today, and Google has taken the opportunity to celebrate the event in a typically idiosyncratic fashion. A series of fruit-based mingames are available through the Google app, with more being added every day.

At what Google calls an "unassuming fruit stand in Rio", produce from around the world has been gathered to compete "for the title of freshest fruit." This competition takes place across multiple events, including pineapple tennis, a strawberry sprint and coconut cycling, providing a surreal mirror of the Olympic games, with significantly more danger involved for the participants.
There are currently a handful of games on offer, but Google will be adding more as the Olympics progress.
All you need to take part is an Android or iOS device with the Google app installed. Once you have that, open up the app and press on the fruit doodle.
The name of the games is the 2016 Doodle Fruit Games, and anyone is welcome to take part.
The specifics of how Google arrived at this idea remain illusive, but suffice to say that they provide a great way to waste some idle time. Have you put your fruit athletic abilities to the test yet? What game is your favorite? Let us know in the comments.
